The Katas Raj Temples (also spelled as Katasraj) are a complex of Hindu temples located in the Chakwal District of Punjab, Pakistan, nestled in the Salt Range mountains. These temples are not only sacred for Hindus but are also historically significant for Buddhists and Sikhs.
At the heart of the complex lies the Katas pond (or Katas Kund), a natural spring-fed lake of immense spiritual significance. The temples, built around this pond, are spread across a scenic and historically rich site surrounded by hills and ancient ruins.
Religious & Mythological Significance
The name “Katas” is derived from the Sanskrit word “kataksha”, meaning “tearful” or “tear drop.”
According to Hindu mythology, when Sati, the consort of Lord Shiva, died, he wept inconsolably. His tears gave birth to two sacred ponds — one at Pushkar (India) and the other at Katas Raj.
The pond at Katas Raj is thus believed to be formed from Shiva’s tears, making it a powerful place of pilgrimage, particularly for Shaivites (followers of Lord Shiva).
